Not content to simply throw together all your favorite DC comic book heroes and bad guys and hit blend, The Lego Batman Movie 。 also borrows a dizzying array of villains from other pop culture properties -- including icons from the Warner Bros. vault like 。The Lord of the Rings。franchise's all-seeing Sauron, Harry Potter。's Voldemort and。 The Matrix。's Agent Smith.。
That's not even counting all the other "uber villains" featured in the film: Gremlins, Velociraptors, Daleks, the Wicked Witch from 。 The Wizard of Oz。, mythological monster Medusa, Universal's King Kong and The Creature from the Black Lagoon, to name a few. 。
With all that star power, is there anyone that 。 Lego Batman。director Chris McKay wanted to include but couldn't?
Oh yeah: Kathy Bates.。
Or, to be more specific, Bates' character in 。 Misery。, Annie Wilkes. 。
Thanks for signing up! 。 "I wish we could've done Kathy Bates from。Misery 。 . That would've been fun, but to set that up and to explain it... I was already jamming a lot of characters in the movie with the main cast, with the Rogues Gallery, bringing in these other characters and things like that," McKay tells。Mashable 。 Mashable。. "I did honestly pitch Kathy Bates from。 Misery。as a character [and] for some reason I wanted to do Daniel Day Lewis from。
Gangs of New York 。..."。 SEE ALSO:Will Arnett prank calling a toy store as Lego Batman is so damn funny 。Ultimately, McKay says, it came down to whether the villains would be instantly recognizable, which ended up torpedoing the idea for Annie and。
Sherlock Holmes。
' Moriarty, among others.。 "It's hard because you want it to be immediately identifiable, so with Sauron, it's like, you get it. You get the shape, you've seen that. It's very iconic, it's very clear," McKay says. "Voldemort, characters like that, you get it. Agent Smith -- even though it's like a guy in a business suit with sunglasses, you hear that voice and it's one guy that turns into three. Even if you haven't seen those movies, you might've seen something like that in a commercial, if you're a kid who can't go see R-rated movies." 。Speaking of Voldemort, any。 Speaking of Voldemort, any。Harry Potter 。
fan worth their salt knows that Ralph Fiennes played the iconic baddie in the film franchise, and also provides the voice of Alfred in。
Lego Batman。. Was there any consideration about having Fiennes tackle both roles at once, as a bonus for fans?
"I really wanted to. I was like, 'Can't we just have him do both? Wouldn't that be fun?'" McKay admits, revealing that he ultimately backed off from the idea because he couldn't fit in a meeting between Fiennes' two characters amidst the chaos of the final act. Instead, British comedian Eddie Izzard voiced He Who Must Not Be Named, leaving Fiennes free to dedicate himself to his butler duties.。
Still, seeing the Dark Knight fight Sauron, Voldemort, King Kong and a bunch of Gremlins is pretty awesome already, so we can't really hold it against him. 。
