The GOP is putting words in Abraham Lincoln's mouth. 。
On the revered president's 208th birthday, the GOP shared a photo of the Lincoln Memorial with a quote that -- though attributed to Lincoln -- is one he never actually said.。

A quick Google search shows that most people on the internet think this is a Lincoln quote, too, with plenty of little homemade memes to share. But the sleuths over at。 Vox 。Vox 。 dug up a blog post from the。Quote Investigator 。 site that claims that the quote didn't come from Lincoln but, rather, Edward Stieglitz’s book 。The Second Forty Years 。

site also follows the evolution of the quote's use through ads in the 1940s and 1950s -- never once attributed to Lincoln -- and its usage by Illinois governor Adlai Stevenson, who was at one point credited with the quote. 。
